I was very lucky recently and my Mum came to visit for three very busy weeks! These photos are from the first week of her visit here. We stayed downtown for a few days enjoying Dar and then we went to Bagamoyo for a day in the lovely company of R. Then off to Zanzibar for a few days.
The view from a hotel in downtown Dar.
Some flowers my Mum really liked downtown.
The Fish Market at the Kigamboni Ferry station downtown, this man was scaling fish.
More Fish Market.
We decided that crab was an appropriate fresh breakfast so we browsed and then selected one. This is some of the selection.
Our big boy breakfast crab to be boiled and broken!
The cooking area near the ferry and the Fish Market.
One of the pots.
This is the beach docking area in Bagamoyo.
The coral is used as stone because it is so unbreakable.
“NoneBacteria Ice”
Advice though, if you’re going to Bagamoyo make a stop in PoaPoa for a drink, loved the Banana Iced Coffee!
The “Livingstone Tower” where Livingstone’s body was laid for a night before being shipped back to England via Zanzibar in 1874.
Kaole Mosque Ruins just outside Bagamoyo from the 15th Century.
This is the fruit from the Neem Tree, our guide let us try some off the tree- pretty yummy treat!
I was taken not long after arriving to the Upanga Club, which is the Indian Club in Dar, on Friday night’s you can play Bingo, have some good Indian food and some drinks. It makes for a fabulous Friday night! This photo is me and two of my favourite people in Dar. The most wonderful couple I might have ever met. I am one lucky lady to know both R and B!
Sidenote, Konyagi is essentially the national “drink” for a fun weekend and at most places they sell it by the bottle! Konyagi is gin, and the bottle usually costs about 10,000 TSH or 6.32$ CDN.
In the street in Stone Town, right near the Old Fort.
Freddy Mercury, from Queen, was born in Zanzibar. This is what is there to commemorate that.
We went to visit Prison/ Changuu Island to see the giant tortoises. They happened to be in mating season… it really was as hilarious as it looks! And the sound they make during tops the list of the funniest things I’ve seen/heard here!
This is me swimming in the water off the beach island. We went snorkelling afterwards in the reef off the island. It was totally worth the trip!
Note: The snorkelling is actually better quality just off Stone Town. I snorkelled in Jambiani and the two experiences were really different, and I had a great time at both but there was much more to see and much more colour near Stone Town.
At first I was planning to go to another part of Zanzibar, but the truth is that I just love Jambiani so much that I wanted to take my Mum there. So we went, most of the time it rained on and off but we got fun Henna painting done and had a lovely relaxing few days playing Scrabble.
