I find it only fitting to ensure that previous “Abouts” are below so as to follow the evolution of this blog, which began a long time ago now! I am just beginning my Masters in English Literature with a Collaboration in African Studies at Carleton. My life is divided between Fergus and Ottawa in Canada, and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. I love a few things about all else: the people in my life, cheese, opinions, talking, doing over thinking about doing and Africa. Enjoy the old posts, the new posts and know that my musings are only that, thoughts displayed on the internet for public consumption to potentially provoke thought, but primarily to help me get them out of my head! xxx

Karibu! That is officially the first KiSwahili word I have learned pre-departure!

Below is the old summary of my life pre-Dar. I am now taking up new positions and much has happened since the creation of this blog including starting jobs, ending jobs, starting and ending friendships and relationships, ending my undergrad, starting a new internship and much more. As I will be returning to Dar in January 2014, I will revamp this blog and update everything for the new adventures that I expect and hope to take place. For now I will leave you knowing that the best is yet to come. Baadaye! – Alana

Happy Reading!

I am a 21 year old Canadian woman gearing up to live in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania for ten months for school and travel. I am doing a full year of my studies abroad and I am lucky enough to be involved in a CIDA internship with Students for Development. I will be working with Professor Rose Shayo as a research assistant at the University of Dar es Salaam during her course Gender and Sexuality/ Sexual Harassment and Gender-Based Violence in Higher Education in North America and Africa. I hope to update this blog frequently and use it as my lifeline with everyone back home. Here’s hoping I can rock it out, regardless, thank you for taking the time to check out the things I am and have been doing, thinking, and seeing in Dar.

  1. Hey Alana,
Gramma gave me the link for your blog. Please post often so I have something to read on my night shifts lol. And you can send me blueberry oreos as a wedding present!

  2. Hi,
I just found your blog while searching for information on living in Dar. My mom is moving there next month and I have been thinking of following her while working from home as I have always wanted to experience Tanzania (I used to live in Maputo previously).

I would love to get some tips from you on what is fun and happening in Dar, and what I should and should not do when there, if there is anything I should think about bringing before moving etc.

So far I have just browsed through your blog briefly, but can tell you have some amazing photos and I am very excited about finally visiting Tanzania.
